Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
General Product Related:
Q: What are the key features of this product?
A:The usage paradigm for Moldflow Communicator is centered on the following three key features:
- Visualize results exported from Moldflow Plastics Insight® (MPI®) and Moldflow Plastics
Advisers® (MPA®) to identify problems and validate solutions.
- Compare results between two studies to realize design improvement.
- Quantify analysis inputs and results against a set of criteria or best practices. (Note: This feature
is available only with results exported from MPI).
Q: Who is this product targeted for?
A: The product was developed primarily as a means for Moldflow users to share analysis results and
design knowledge with distributed product teams. A secondary reason was to allow companies that
either outsource or rely on their vendors or suppliers to perform analysis, to have a means to quantify
the quality of analyses performed. This is achieved through user-specified analysis quality criteria.
Q: What
benefits does Moldflow Communicator offer MPI users?
A: Through the Moldflow Communicator, users can:
- More easily communicate insight gained from analysis to non-Moldflow users.
- Improve communication beyond core design teams. For example, manufacturing personnel,
procurement engineers,
- Increase collaborative design and procurement workflow efficiencies
- Reduce expensive late design changes and errors
Q: I currently prepare HTML/Word/PowerPoint reports to
share results. Why should I use Moldflow Communicator?
A: Moldflow Communicator addresses inadequacies of the traditional communication tools, which include
project reports created in HTML, Microsoft Word or PowerPoint formats. These reports may include a
combination of text, static images and 2D animations. However, these traditional communication tools
may not be adequate for sharing critical information among distributed teams. Moldflow
Communicator enables extended team members to view results dynamically and interactively on 3D
models. Additionally, Moldflow Communicator features a set of powerful tools to simultaneously
compare analysis results from two studies (a study is an analysis iteration). It also features options to
synchronize model orientation, result selection and result plot scale to investigate the models and
results simultaneously.
Q: Which type of results can I view with Moldflow Communicator?
A: This product supports virtually any result generated within Moldflow Plastics Insight® (MPI®) and
Moldflow Plastics Advisers® (MPA®). These results can be XY plots; shaded, contour, scalar, vector
and tensor plots; iso-surfaces; displacement plots; and animations.
Q: What type of visualization capabilities does Moldflow
Communicator support?
A: Moldflow Communicator supports extensive model manipulation and visualization capabilities,
including the dynamic and incremental pan/zoom/rotate functions, standard view orientations, select
saved view bookmarks, cutting planes and similar features.
Q: Are there tutorials available with the product?
A: Yes. The product comes with a tutorial. Additionally,
the Gallery
section offers several examples which can be downloaded and viewed
inside the Moldflow Communicator.
Q: What are the system requirements?
A: Details of supported hardware and system requirements are provided on www.moldflow.com
Q: What is the input file format for Moldflow Communicator?
A: Moldflow Communicator supports files with *.MFR (Moldflow Results) extension. These MFR files can
be created inside MPI and MPA. Additional information on creating MFR files is provided towards the
bottom of this page.
Q: I already own Moldflow Plastics Insight (MPI) and or Moldflow Plastics Advisers (MPA).
Can I still use the Moldflow Communicator?
A: Yes, the Moldflow Communicator was developed for the benefit of MPI users, MPA users and nonusers.
Q: How do I get customer support?
A: Only e-mail based support is provided for Moldflow Communicator. MPI and MPA customers on active
maintenance can contact regular support channels for assistance with Moldflow Communicator. We
recommend all other users to email their questions to, support@moldflow.com
Q: What languages is the product available in?
A: At the present time, the product is only available
in English.
MFR File Related:
Q: What is an MFR file and what does it contain?
A: The MFR file is the input file format to the Moldflow Communicator. It contains both the analysis
model and analysis results and can be created inside MPI. A single MFR file can contain results from
up to two studies (a study is an analysis iteration). Additionally, up to eight results can be exported
per analysis type. For example, a Fill+Pack/Cool/Warp analysis may contain up to 24 results. This
offers great flexibility in distribution and sharing of results.
Q: How do I create an MFR file?
A: To create a MFR file, you will require MPI 6.0 Revision 1 or higher, or MPI 8.1 Revision 3 or higher.
Inside MPI’s Synergy or the MPA user interface, open a study with results. Decide which results you
want to export keeping in mind that you can export up to eight results per analysis type. Simply right
click on any result and select, ‘Mark for export’. Repeat this process for the other results. To create
the MFR file, select, File/Export. To export results from two studies, using CTRL key, pick the two
studies and then select, File/Export.
Q: What is the typical file size of a MFR file?
A: The file size depends on the number of results
exported, types of results exported, size of the model (i.e., number
of elements) and type of mesh used. To ensure efficient file size,
we employ compression technology.
Q: Would compressing the file using WinZip or other similar
programs further reduce the MFR file size?
A: As stated in the above response, the MFR files are already compressed. Therefore, you will realize little to no further file size reduction using WinZip or other similar products.
Q: What is the minimum version of MPI required to export
MFR files?
A:MPI 6.0 Revision 1 or MPA 8.1 Revision 3 are the minimum versions required.
